Talk About Local (TAL) is an ‘unconference’ style event organised each year by the organisation of the same name, a place for ‘hyperlocal’ media producers and journalists to meet up, exchange ideas and banter. It was last held in Birmingham in 2012, and given that BCU’s School of Media is becoming something of a hotbed for research into hyperlocal media (for example, our recent work on the Creative Citizens project), this year we are hosting it at BCU’s Curzon building. Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe this is the first time it’s been hosted by a university. Dave Harte and I have attended the last few, and they are really valuable for reaching out to speak with those practitioners who are often the focus of our research, where the unconference format allows anyone to propose short but unplanned workshops, discussions, debates or presentations.Oh and the awards, who can forget the awards – pictured are Steph and James Clarke from WV11 winning their award in 2012 for community engagement.
When: Saturday 15th October, 10am-4pm
Where: BCU Curzon building, 4 Cardigan St, Birmingham, B4 7BD
