Tim Wall and Paul Long have contributed ‘Sight and Sound in Concert? The Interrelationship Between Music and Television’ to ‘The SAGE Handbook of Popular Music’ edited by Andy Bennett and Steve Waksman.
Here’s an outline of the chapter:
The relationship between television and music is an area neglected by both television and music academics, and those studies which do exist demonstrate an ambivalence about the role of television within music culture. Yet, the music and broadcasting industries are intimately tied together, often owned by the same major corporations, and popular music is central to the soundtrack, content and subject matter of a large amount of television. This chapter explores the meaning of music in various genres of music television, the way such programming developed and the way televised music is consumed.
